Christmas is coming and the angel craze is in full swing. There’s a plethora of angel themed movies to watch, angel paraphernalia for consumers to purchase, angels of every size and shape prominently featured on Christmas cards, and angels are mentioned in some of the songs we sing. Hark! the Herald Angels Sing is a huge favorite this time of year.
Contrary to popular belief, angels are not chubby little babes with fat rosy cheeks, nor are they gorgeous females with gossamer wings, a mane of Farrah Fawcett tresses, dressed to the nines in magnificent flowing gowns. In fact, only two elect holy angels (the good guys) are mentioned by name in the Bible: Michael and Gabriel – and both of them are of the male gender. Scripture also mentions the Angel of the Lord; Michael the archangel; the Captain of the Host of the Lord; messengers; guardians.
Scripture also mentions fallen angels (the bad guys). The most notorious fallen angel is Lucifer (later called Satan and the devil). Last, but not least, Scripture mentions the angel of the Abyss (Destroyer).
The Bible tells us very little about angels except that they are sent by God to do His bidding. So calling upon the angels is a complete waste of time.
As the birth of our Savior approaches, Christians should be focusing on one angel in particular — the Angel of the Lord. God sent His messenger to Earth on an important mission. He was to go to Mary to announce that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, she would conceive and give birth to the Savior of the world.
“The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, ‘God with us’” (Matthew 1:23).

Two Scriptures to consider:
“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4: 24) This is Jesus who is speaking. He tells us God is spirit–but addresses God as “Him.”
You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. (Exodus 20: 4)
I have been thinking about this a lot, but in light of West’s above article, what about all these angels we adorn our homes with? Angels are spiritual beings, are they not? Is the Lord casual about such a thing? What do you think?
